Nancy Bearss, PAC,MPH

As a Physician Assistant with a Masters in Public Health, Nancy Bearss has been working with adolescents for the past seventeen years. Originally she worked as a Clinician in West Baltimore at a local hospital and at Planned Parenthood before getting my MPH at Johns Hopkins in 1989. Since that time she has been providing services to adolescents in school-based health clinics. Nancy's sbhc experience in Baltimore included direct service delivery at Southwestern High School and empirical research on contraceptive behavior of students attending six school-based health centers in Baltimore City. In addition, she trained health care providers in reproductive health. Other Baltimore City activities included co-chairing the Board of Waverly Family Center (a family support center) and working part-time with People's Community Health Center. In 1991 Nancy moved to Delaware and began work as Coordinator and Physician Assistant at Sussex Tech Wellness Center in Georgetown, DE, a rural community in Southern Delaware. Visiting Nurse Association of Delaware operates this clinic. In 1992 Governor Tom Carper, as a campaign initiative, promoted the growth of Wellness Centers (SBHCs) in Delaware and Nancy was asked to take over the management of VNA's three centers. In addition to coordinating seven clinics she has been serving on the Governor's Alliance for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention to try and increase the access of reproductive services to youth. She has also started a Wellness Clinic (based on the SBHC model) at a race-track (thoroughbred horses) in Newark, DE.
