| | Gallup Student Poll Gallup and America’s Promise Alliance have collaborated to create a new survey designed to track American students for the next 10 years on three measures: - Hope, “the ideas and energy we have for the future. Hope predicts GPA and retention in college, and hope scores are more robust predictors of college success than are high school GPA, SAT, and ACT scores.”
- Engagement, “the involvement in and enthusiasm for school. Engagement distinguishes between high-performing and low-performing schools.”
- Well-being, “how we think about and experience our lives. Well-being tells us how are students are doing today and predicts their success in the future. High school freshmen with high well-being earn more credits with a higher GPA than peers with low-well being.”
The Gallup Student Poll is an innovative effort to gather information about America’s youth from the one source often overlooked: the youth themselves. It consists of a 12- to 15-minute Web-based survey. Gallup researchers chose these three variables to track based on four criteria: 1. They can be reliably measured 2. They have a meaningful relationship with or impact on educational outcomes 3. They are malleable and can be enhanced through deliberate action 4. They are not measured directly by another large-scale survey or testing program In March 2009 the Gallup Student Poll surveyed 70,078 students in grades 5 through 12, from 335 schools and 59 districts in 18 states and the District of Columbia. The polls were completed during one of four periods in March, during school hours. The findings from the March testing for each index are as follows: - On the Hope Index, 50% of students scored “Hopeful”, 33% scored “Stuck”, and 17% scored “Discouraged”
- On the Engagement Index, 50% of student scored “Engaged”, 33% scored “Not Engaged”, and 20% scored “Actively Disengaged”
- On the Well-Being Index, 63% of students scored “Thriving”, 36% scored “Struggling”, and 1% scored “Suffering”
- One-quarter of students met the criteria for the classifications of hopeful, engaged, and thriving.
