The CSMH is involved in a number of initiatives and projects at the local, state, and national levels. Below are some of the current projects that we are working on: • The School Mental Health Connection The School Mental Health Connection (SchoolMentalHealth.org) is a website created and maintained by the Center for School Mental Health. The site is designed to provide clinicans, educators, families, students, and anyone else interested in school-based mental health with related information and resources. • Baltimore School Mental Health Initiative The Baltimore School Mental Health Initiative (BSMHI) seeks to promote wellness and reduce the barriers to learning for students with challenging emotional and behavioral disabilities in grades K – 8 in the Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools). BSMHI provides more intensive therapeutic and case management services, training for school staff and families, and a full array of mental health services to help students learn and be successful in the least restrictive environment. Beyond augmenting clinical services provided by City Schools staff, BSMHI emphasizes collaboration and consultation with school staff, families, and child serving systems• Prince George's County School Mental Health Initiative This partnership between the CSMH, the Maryland State Department of Education, and PG County Public Schools is geared toward helping students with significant emotional and behavioral problems and enhancing staff competency. • Anne Arundel School Mental Health Initiative Operating in four school in Anne Arundel County, this initiative is geared towards developing and providing evidence-based programs and mental health services to youth who have emotional disabilities and are "at risk". • Calverton Elementary/Middle School Mental Health Initiative The Calverton School Mental Health Initiative focuses on providing a full continuum of mental health serices at the elementary/middle school. In addition to providing individual, group, and family therapy, our staff organizes a program called 1100 Peace, which includes peer mediation, "Making It Right" groups, and schoolwide climate-enhancement activities. • Excellence in School Mental Health Initiative This project sought to improve and implement evidence-based positive learning strategies and school cohesion within two Baltimore City elementary/middle schools. The purpose of MHET was to increase knowledge and implementation of mental health screening, diagnosis, referral, coding, and empirically-supported short-term interventions among SBHC primary care and mental health providers. This interdisciplinary initiative reached 19 SBHCs in six states between 2004-2006 and was designed based on a four- pronged approached to evidenced-based practice in school mental health: 1) decrease stress/risk factors; 2) increase protective factors; 3) increase knowledge in core mental health skills, and 4) implement evidence-based manualized interventions. Click here to view the MHET Final Report, which presents the methodology, results and lessons learned from the two-year MHET initiative, and provides direction for future initiatives designed to enhance school-based primary care and mental health providers’ mental health service quality. • School Mental Health and Foster Care The Goal of this grant is to assist the State of Maryland's Transformation Grant in its support of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Mental Hygiene Administration (MHA), Department of Human Resources (DHR), and local Departments of Social Services, in collaboration with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services, and other state and local agencies and initiatives in integrating services and improving outcomes for children, adolescents, and graduates of Maryland's foster care system.
• Center for Adolescent Research in Schools Project The primary goal of this project is to develop and evaluate an intervention package to reduce the fundamental challenges experienced by secondary students with serious behavioral disorders (SBD). Given the paucity of research with this age group, the group will use a multi-stage process of development, refinement, and valuation. A secondary goal is to conduct supplemental studies leading to improved outcomes for secondary students with SBD. • Telemental Health in Schools |
