Externships, Internships, & Fellowships
The University of Maryland School Mental Health Program offers clinical externships/practicum to graduate students studying clinical social work, professional counseling, school psychology, or clinical psychology. Externs are placed in a Baltimore City public school approximately two days per week and receive individual and group supervision. This clinical training opportunity provides the extern with experience in mental health prevention and promotion (including whole school activities, classroom presentations, teacher in-services) as well as individual, group and family therapy for general education students. Pre-doctoral Psychology Internship
The University of Maryland (UMB) School of Medicine (SOM) and its Center for School Mental Health (CSMH) in Baltimore, Maryland is nationally recognized as having a leading interprofessional training program in school mental health (SMH) for psychology, social work, counseling, and psychiatry trainees. UMB is the only American Psychological Association (APA) Accredited psychology internship that offers comprehensive major rotation experiences in SMH practice, research, and policy with a goal of preparing scientist-practitioners to work with vulnerable and underserved populations in schools. Currently, the SMH Psychology Internship Track, part of the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS)/UMB Psychology Internship Consortium, will offer three intern positions in the 2018-2019 training year. The CSMH offers a postdoctoral fellowship in child and adolescent mental health. This position involves opportunities to advance skills in research, training, policy and practice related to child and adolescent mental health services, with an emphasis on school-based services. Fellows work with leaders and faculty in the areas of school mental health, which may include specialized training in evidence-based practice implementation, prevention and intervention programming in schools, mental health workforce development initiatives for school staff and school mental health clinicians, Systems of Care, and family engagement. In addition to collaborating on school mental health research and training activities, the fellowship may include the opportunity for clinical practice in schools, depending on candidates’ interests and experience. The CSMH offers research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. There is a wide variety of potential opportunities for research externs, including literature reviews, data entry, data analysis, report writing, citation manager experience, attending clinician professional development trainings, and more, depending on interest and experience.
