Steven Adelsheim, MD is a child psychiatrist and Director of the New Mexico School Mental Health Programs in the New Mexico Department of Health, a statewide effort to improve educational outcomes for children by linking schools and mental health supports. Dr. Adelsheim is the Associate Vice Chair for Outreach Partnerships and Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Family/Community Medicine, and Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.
Named as one of the Best Doctors in America in 2002 and 2003, Dr. Adelsheim is a nationally recognized consultant in the field of School Mental Health and has worked with many city, state, national and federal programs. He works one day per week in the Acoma-Laguna School Based Health Centers outside of Albuquerque. He is a Co-Investigator on 3 grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; all focused on linking mental health supports to schools.
Dr. Adelsheim received his BA from Harvard College where he majored in Psychology and Social Relations. Following 2 years of work in children's mental health, one spent providing school mental health programs in isolated schools in the Alaska interior, Dr. Adelsheim attended the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine, where he received his M.D. in 1985. Dr. Adelsheim then attended the University Of New Mexico Department Of Psychiatry for both his residency in Psychiatry and his fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He is married and has four daughters.
